August 28th, 2008 - Anthony Parker
I found Bride and Prejudice to be a very cheesy, but occasionally funny, rendition of Pride and Prejudice. The film has a very lighthearted feel to it; it is hard to take anything said seriously. Despite that it is a more sophisticated film than it appears on the surface. It explores the effects of colonialism on the largest colony, population wise, ever in existence. The film also shows the culture clash between the Western World, the UK and USA, and India. For instance, arranged marriages are still practiced in India, and many seem to find that desirable but Mr. Darcy finds it to be a backwards practice. The people in India have nothing compared to Mr. Darcy, and yet I think he almost envies them because they are so family oriented; all of the sisters are so close to each other.
In closing, it was a cute film that explored many of the issues affecting India in relation to the western world.
